Thunderstorms Clear Way for Great Night of Sunfish Sailing

  • Sunfish getting off to a good start

Thunderstorms and rain during the afternoon must have led some sailors to schedule something else in the evening. But, those who came to the Club were treated to some fabulous sailing weather. A good breeze stayed with the sailors all evening and hiking was in order much of the time.

Neil Harrision continued his hot streak in Sunfish Racing. He had a first and two second place finishes. In the third race however, he suffered the misfortune of creating a mess at the leeward mark, and took a DSQ. Neil was leading John Fishbeck slightly going around the leeward mark. John saw an opportunity to split tacks and tacked immediately. When Neil saw this, he also tacked - but right into Dave Vietti who was coming to the leeward mark. Dennis Dudley had an inside overlap on Vietti - "kinda, sorta" and a three boat pileup ensued. John sailed merrily away with a big smile on this face to put another win on the board.

Eddie Fletcher came out to sail and made his presence known with a first in the third race. Eddie said he "got off to a great start, had a little luck, and stayed in the lead to the end."

John tackedLightning fleet racing continues to be very competitive . In Sunday racing, Mike Moody, Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan each claimed a victory.

    Lasers In Close Contests

Lasers sail side by side to windward

Only five lasers were on hand Wednesday - but they celebrated good wind with some very close racing.

Mike Moody won the first and third race. Olav Messerschmidt won Race Two while George Siegle won the final contest of the evening.

In each case, the lead changed hands several times and it was difficult for any of the sailors to develop much of a lead.

Jim Fletcher was in a Laser again and had great speed both upwind and downwind. However, during the tacks the mainsheet kept getting caught in his toes and sorting things out lost gound he had gained.

Results will be posted soon and standings updated on the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" and then on the fleet you want result information on.

    Junior Racing Kicks Off

    Thomas Jost posting a win.

Junior Racing season kicked off in earnest Tuesday with junior sailors mixing it up with a coach and a dad on the water.

Thomas Jost showed the way by finishing ahead of his junior challengers in three of the six races. Matt Hurth finished first among the juniors twice and Doug Crawford once.

Upwind goals for Tuesday's racing were to improve close-hauled sailing by consistently pointing well and avoiding sailing past the laylines. All the sailors did a very good job meeting these goals. Downwind, they also met the goal of getting their sail out fully for maximum exposure to the wind. In the starts, these sailors also showed significant improvement, with the goal of being close to the line (within a boat length) at the start.

Junior racing continues on Tuesday evenings through mid-August. Detailed results and pictures of last Tuesday's Junior Racing can be found by clicking on "Junior Sailing" at the home page of the LSC web site: www.lansingsailing.org - then click on "First Race Night" in the upper right hand corner.
