America's Cup Set to Begin Challenger Series

Oracle Boat Arrives in Valencia

In just a little over a month, from April 3rd to the 7th, Act 13 takes place. This is the final opportunity for the sailors to get ready for the Challenger Series that begins in mid April. In Act 13, the twelve teams are involved in fleet racing and it is exciting to see these big boats charging across the starting line.

The US entry, BMW Oracle Racing, recently brought it's boat from New Zealand to Valencia, Spain on an Antonov cargo plane. The team has spent the winter training in New Zealand. Now, with just a few weeks to get ready, the team is moving everything to Valencia where the America's Cup racing will be held.

The cargo plane also brought two masts, two keel bulbs, sails, and a chase boat.

Moody Gets Ready to BloKart on West Coast

Mike BloKarting in the UK last fall

Club member Mike Moody will be heading to the West coast again this spring to participate in the Western Region Blokart Championships in Long Beach March 30 to April 1.

The following week is another blokart event in the desert 35 miles south of Vegas on the "massive" Ivanpah dry lake bed. This is the site of the world record for a wind powered land vehicle (116 mph). Joining Mike will be fellow blokarters Dean Kitchen from Clarkston and Sean Fidler from Royal Oak.

As well as the racing, Mike is taking special equipment in case the wind is favorable for an attempt at the Blokart land speed record of 56 mph. Ivanpah is always a fun time and they seem to get at least one "white knuckle" wind day out of the five. Mike is hoping to send back daily reports as computer time comes available.
