"Sail Fevre" is Hot

Lightning Practice
Tuesday 6 pm
New Sailors Welcome

May 6: Bill Pratt and Bill Davidson
May 10: Mike Moody and VOLUNTEER NEEDED

Merrick Hurlbutt Testing New Mast

John LeFevre was on the water for only the first time this year, but "Sail Fevre's" temperature was hot. With crew Michael-Salomon Jost and Leif Alton, the "Fevre" crew took the lead mid-way through the first race and held off a hard charging "Wind Dancer" at the finish for a well earned bullet. Merrick Hurlbutt was third with Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins crewing. Hurlbutt picked up his new mast last Wednesday, after the original broke a week ago - so he was getting it settled in after an initial tuning.

In race two, Mike Moody was the winner, even after being delayed with the need to do a penalty turn after barging at the start. Wind Dancer followed "Moody's Booty" into the last windward mark and attacked by gybing across the Booty stern and taking Bootys wind to eke out a thin lead. However, crew work by Susanna Tellschow and John Kolstoe on "Moody's Booty" was exceptional and they were able to escape further attack with a smooth gybe and caught a puff to go up on a plane and finish first. Jonathan Ahlbrand was third in race two, meshing the crew work of Bob Bell and Tom Deits.

The wind kept rising during the day, starting about 8 for the first race, but blowing 12-15 by the third race. In that third race, "Wind Dancer" took command early with a perfect start at the pin and catching a major shift to tack and cross the fleet. Bob Miller, Gil Chesbro and Pat Dolan kept extending and won the final race handily. John LeFevre was second and Jonathan Ahlbrand third.

With only two race days completed in 2007 for the Lightnings, complete results and standings aren't yet posted. However, look for them soon through a link on the "Racing" page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

USA's BMW Oracle Ends First Round Robin on Top of Standings

BMW Oracle Racing

The first round robin of the America's Cup Challenger series is now complete - and the leader is the US team "BMW Oracle Racing".

Only one loss, to the Spanish team, marred their record. They defeated the other nine challengers to sit alone at the top of the standings. The next team is the Italian "Luna Rossa Challenge" who had eight wins, followed by the Kiwi "Emirates Team New Zealand" with seven wins.

Round Robin two starts today (Monday, April 30). At the end of the second round, four boats will survive to fight it out in the semi-finals that begin May 14. The challenger finals will begin June 1 with the winner facing off against Alingi in the America's Cup beginning June 22nd.
