Racing was very close Sunday. In the first race for example, five boats finished within about a ten second period of time. "Wind Dancer", "Bo Jangles II" and "Unidentified Flying Pigisus" each found their way to the finish line ahead of the rest. Susanna Tellschow claimed the best day of sailing with two seconds and a first. Julie Pierce and Mike Moody crewed for Susanna.

Lissy Goralnik, who just moved to the Lansing area to pursue a graduate degree, had contacted the Lansing Sailing Club to inquire about crewing. She has sailing in her background, but is experiencing the racing scene for the first time. Lissy was aboard "Wind Dancer" Sunday - and Susanna Tellschow was quick to ask her to crew next week..

Catching a left shift before the start of the first race, Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Lissy Goralnik aboard "Wind Dancer" were alone at the pin end of the line and tacked immediately to cross the fleet. The shift became permanent and it was pretty much a drag race to the end. Tellschow and crew were second and the team of Larry Koster and Michael-Salomon Jost were third on "Shibumi".

Race two saw a reversal of fortune for "Wind Dancer". Coming in on Port before the start, Dolan chose to duck everyone instead of tacking into a hole. This proved to be a costly mistake. Meanwhile, Tellschow and Hurlbutt had clear air and speed that they converted into a solid lead. These two were very close throughout the race, but Hurlbutt claimed the win when Tellschow wasn't able to exercise a starboard advantage on the final downwind. Merrick Hurlbutt was joined by Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins in celebrating a hard earned win. Koster-Jost were again third.

In the final stanza, Tellschow managed to work slightly out in front from a leeward start at the pin and then was able to cross the fleet by tacking immediately when a major left shift came in. The fleet chased her hard, and gave her a little reason to be nervous when they came up quickly on a gust during the final leg to the finish - but she held on for the well deserved win. "Wind Dancer" was second and Koster again third.

Detailed results and standings are available on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" in the left hand navagation column, then on the icon for the fleet desired.

What's Wrong With This Picture?

Check out the picture at the right. There is something a little unusual going on. Can you detect what it is?

Jonathan Ahlbrand is trying a trick most Lightning sailors have attempted at some time in their sailing career.

And, as everyone else who has tried it found out, Jonathan discovered it isn't all that good an idea.

The answer is a spinnaker being flown sideways. The head of the sail is serving as the clew.

Gentleman sailor that he is, Jim Fletcher pointed the error out within a few seconds of the sail being hoisted - but being a gentleman didn't stop Jim from repeating the story several times.

Labor Day Picnic Attracts Great Crowd

The Pratts took responsibility for organizing this year's Labor Day Picnic and it came off as well as any event could. They even controlled the weather and participants enjoyed one of the premier days of the summer.

Capping off the day was a Treasure Hunt involving the need to solve several puzzles - including sailing the lake to pick up puzzle pieces. The group was up to the task and there was booty aplenty to go around from "Ye Olde Treasure Chest". There were MSU playing cards, Mentos, McDonalds Gift Certificates, spring bulbs, fire starters and more.

A good time was had by all.

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Add Electrical Outlet In Kitchen. Add another electrical outlet in the Kitchen area of the Clubhouse near the one used by the refrigerator. When installed, add a six outlet plug-in like the one in the existing outlet, then plug the refrigerator, water cooler, coffee maker and microwave into the new outlets - removing the extension cord currently in use.

Remove Weeds from 20' of South Berm. Matt Allswede got a good start on this task, but there is still a section or two of weeds to remove from the South Berm (both sides) in preparation for wood chips to be put down. Be careful not to remove evergreens, bushes or ground cover (Bishop's Weed?) planted there. This is a long berm, so there are multiple 20' sections that need attention.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.

Recent Tasks Completed - Thanks
