Requests for 2008 Race Committee Sign-up will begin after the first of the year.

In the battle for second place in the season standings, Merrick Hurlbutt came out on top. Hurlbutt came into the final day of racing with a slim 78 point lead, but managed to finish ahead of Tellschow in two of the final three races to lock up second place. Merrick had at 2-3-4 day while Susanna was 3-4-3. On the water however, it was obvious that both skippers would be worthy. The action was back and forth on a light and variable day with the advantage shifting between the two boats many times during the three races.

Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Terry Kleiman took "Wind Dancer" around the course to finish first in all three races. The "Wind Dancer" team managed to win fourteen of their last fifteen races to cement their first place position in the season standings and wind up comfortably ahead of the other boats. This is the fifth consecutive fleet championship for "Wind Dancer". Team members in 2007 have included Dolan (skipper), Gil Chesbro (middle crew), Bob Miller (front crew), Chris Miller (front crew), Maureen Soergel (front crew), and Terry Kleiman (middle crew).

Jonathan Ahlbrand wound up in fourth place for the season while Larry Koster was fifth.

Mike Moody, Blaine Severin, Jim Fletcher and John LeFevre were all close to qualifying for recognition in the season standings, but were not able to compete in a sufficient number of races.

LSC Provides Race Committee for MSU Cedarfest Regatta

The Committee Boat and two Safety Boats were all staffed by Lansing Sailing Club member volunteers Saturday and Sunday at MSU's annual Cedarfest Regatta.

Pat Dolan served as Principal Race Officer with help on the Committee Boat Saturday from Susnna Tellschow and Maureen Soergel. On Sunday, Dolan was joined by Suzanne Decocq. This crew started the races and scored the finishes.

One of the Safety Boats saw Alanna Harvey, Mike Middlewood and Bob Brook at the windward end of the course on Saturday. Light winds meant that little time was spent helping capsized boats. They did move the windward mark as needed and were called on several times to let sailors know of courses changes when the leeward mark was moved. They also handled transportation and shuttled results to the MSU shore crew. On Sunday this responsibility was picked up by Merrick Hurlbutt and Scott Watkins, but a lack of wind resulted in the sailors never going on the water to challenge the superb capabilities of the LSC volunteers.

Safety Boat Two worked the leeward end of the race course. After safety issues, moving the leeward mark as needed and changing the pin position for each start and finish gook up a lot of their time. Doug Carlson, Aaron Picot and Olav Messerschmidt handled these duties.

The Regatta was a big success and the MSU Sailing Club was very appreciative of the role LSC played on the water to run the races. Notre Dame won the Regatta. MSU finished third.

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Remove Shingles From Roof of Equipment Shed (Leif Alton has volunteered for this). As part of repair of the Equipment Shed, we want to replace the shingles. Before this can be done, the old shingles need to be removed. Due to the amount of moss and other growth on the roof as well as other considerations, we don't want to put new shingles over the old ones.

Add Shelves on Kitchen Door for Computer Equipment. Add a shelf arrangement on the west side Kitchen door that will support the use of a laptop computer. Also add a shelf for a printer. The shelves need to be designed and constructed so that the door will close smoothly with the computer and printer in place. They also need to be designed and constructed so that the printer and computer will not fall off when the door is opened or closed.

Install Additional Side Controls on "Oh_m". Install a fourth cam cleat in the side control areas of "Oh m" so that the traveler up-down control lines can be led to these points. See "Wind Dancer" or other Lightnings with such a controlfor an example of how this works. Contact Pat Dolan for the cam cleats.

Cut off Bolt Ends on "Oh m" Side Controls. The ends of bolts that hold the side control panel in place on "Oh m" need to be sawed off, then filed so the ends are smooth. There are four of these bolts on each side.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.
