Moonlight Sail Friday

The weather forecast calls for a very nice day Friday, sunny with temps in the high 70s. Plan on capping it off with a Moonlight Sail under a full moon.

Bring a small dessert to share at 8 along with a beverage of your choice. If you want, come early and grill dinner.

Plan on sailing or motoring on the Club Pontoon about 9, by which time the moon shold be nicely overhead.

Labor Day Picnic

The annual Labor Day Picnic is set to go next Monday at noon. With Pratts and Loeschers in charge, expect things to be well organized and lots of fun - including some kind of on-water activity. Bring a dish to pass. LSC provides brats, chicken, hot dogs, soft drinks, paper and plastic.

The Year's First Lightning Capsize Highlights Sunday Racing

Wind's were generally in the 8 to 12 range from the north-northwest Sunday - offering so very nice sailing. However, some kind of freek something came through without warning. First it upended Walter DeGruyter's Hobie Cat on the shore - then jumped to the site of the windward mark where it targeted "Moody's Booty" and capsized her.

Other boats in the area were tossed about a bit too and it was exciting for a short time - but the rest of the sailors managed to keep the right side up. Pat Dolan and crew quickly got to the Safety Boat and prepared to assist, but Mike and crew already had the "Booty" righted and under sail to clear out accumulated water.

Blaine Severin, sailing with Tom Deits and Julie Pierce, went on to win that final race. The "Flying Pigasus" crew also posted two second place finishes on a day in which they sailed extremely well.

Mike Moody, Christa Betts and Brad Kleihege had third place finishes in the first two races before a DNF due to the capsize in race 3. John LeFevre gathered a third place finish in the final race of the day with help from Gary marx and John Kolstoe to make for a 5-6-3 day.

Larry Koster, Deon Claybourne and Cassie Guarino were aboard "Shibumi" and kept improving with each race, ending the day 6-5-4. Jonathan Ahlbrand was back together with his regulars Tom Hutton and Nikiforos Delatolas to earn two fourth place finishes before gathering a second in the final race.

The "Wind Dancer" crew of Pat Dolan, Chris Miller and Bob Miller was on top of their game during the first two races, scoring first place finishes in each. They took a DNF in the final race to be in position to assist "Moody's Booty" if necessary.

Sunfish and Lasers Battle Light Air

Sailors waged another losing battle yesterday against Light Air. The "LSC" in Lansing Sailing Club quickly stood for Lansing Supper Club as most of the group adjourned to Spags.

Quizmaster Doug was in fine form, catching all but three in his web of "easy" race rules quizes. Remember, if you are the leeward of two overlapped boats approaching an obstacle, you can choose to go to windward of the obstacle and the windward boat must keep clear - but, if you choose to go to leeward of the obstacle, you must make room for the windward boat if she wants it.

One More Week of Laser and Sunfish Racing

With one more week of Laser and Sunfish Wednesday Racing remaining in the 2009 season, Lasers are poised to have a record number of sailors qualify for awards - as many as 17 could potentially qualify.

Don't forget the earlier (6:00 pm) start time. The sun is setting earlier.

Although yesterday's racing was cancelled due to lack of wind, last week was another great evening on the water. For the Lasers, Doug Carlson added two first place finishes to his total while Susanna Wagner and Mike Moody picked up the other two top spots.

With fourteen Lasers on the water, competition was stiff and getting good results tough. Still, nine of the sailors posted top half finishes at one point or another.

For the sunfish, John Fishbeck was on a roll. He put three firsts and a second on the board. Jim Fletcher sailed only one race - but took the top spot. Dave Vietti was 2-2-3-3 on the night while Dennis Dudley was 3-3-4-4. Mary Beth Fletcher missed the first race, but then went 4-5-2 to give each Sunfish Sailor at least one top three finish.

Pick a Job to Do

As all Lansing Sailing Club members know, the Club thrives because of the willingness of our members to take on jobs that need to be done. Here is a list of some tasks that need attention right now. To volunteer contact Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher (email: janef@tir.com, phone: 517-655-2174) or Commodore Pat Dolan (email: commodore@lansingsailing.org, phone: 517-214-6568). They will arrange for you to get complete details on what needs to be done.

Club Boat Organization - With the new racks in place, Club Boats need to be reorganized, including putting clear markings on the boats and rack location.

Jobs Underway

Cement Work Estimate - estimates are needed for launch ramp repair, seawall reconstruction and construction of a pad for the Racing Equipment Shed. - Bob Miller

Club Boat Sail/Blade Storage - LSC has several new (to us) Club Boats. Additional storage for blades and sails has been created in the Laser/Sunfish Sail Shed. - Thanks Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan
