Big Crowd Enjoys Awards Banquet

The 2009 Awards Banquet was a big success. Thanks to Scott Watkins, Susan Peters and Adrianne Watkins for their planning and organization.

The Laser Fleet handed out 16 awards, the most sailors that have ever qualified during a season. The fleet has definitely grown and is prospering.

Among the special awards:

Crew of the Year: Tom Hutton and Nikiforos Delatolas

Jane Marshall Award : Julie Pierce

Corinthian Award: Larry Koster

More detail coming soon.

Traditional Craft from 2008 Gathering

Pine Lake Traditional Crafters Coming to LSC

The Pine Lake Traditional Craft Association held its annual gathering at the Lansing Sailing Club on Saturday, September 26th, from 10 am to 4 pm.

"The weather was punk," writes Sandy Bryson, "but we had a few boats out."

Among the boats was John Hansen's rowing/sailing Wherry with a sprit rig, shown in the picture on the right with John at the helm and Sandy crewing..

Hurlbutt in August Race

Hurlbutt Leads Lightning Sailors

Merrick Hurlbutt had the hot boat on Lake Lansing today.

In the first race, he and crew Scott Watkins battled at the top of the fleet, but eventually fell behind "Wind Dancer" by several hundred yards. Then, nearing the end of the last downwind leg, the leaders were becalmed and "Bo Jangles II" rode fresh wind all the way to the leeward mark where their momentum carried them to leeward and in front of their competitor. A tacking duel ensued, but Hurlbutt and Watkins were on top of their game and prevailed as both boats shot the finish line.

In races two and three, Susanna Wagner joined the team aboard "Bo Jangles II" and they scored second place finishes.

No one was going to beat Jonathan Ahlbrand in the second race. He had the cat bird's seat at the start, stayed in phase and kept extending all the way to the end. Nikiforos Delatolas and Tom Hutton were aboard "Bananas" with Ahlbrand.

The "Moody's Booty" crew traded off opportunities to drive the boat. Brad Kleihege had the helm in race one, John Kolstoe in race two and Mike Moody in race three. The threesome put a 3-4-3 on the board. Meanwhile, the "Wind Dancer" crew got a 2nd, a 3rd and then finished the day with a win. Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro were aboard the "Dancer" with skipper Pat Dolan.

Melges 17 on Lake Lansing

LSC Sailors Try Out a Melges 17

Sean Fidler brought his Melges 17 to the Lansing Sailing Club today so that LSC sailors could get an opportunity to try out this new hot boat.

Fidler began by sailing along with the Lightning Fleet to show the great speed of the boat. It was quickly off the start line and at the first mark well before any of the other boats. He kept extending after that, and put in a few side trips as well.

After racing, a number of sailors took the helm and found out first hand the excitement this boat generates. The Melges 17 is about 16.5 feet long and 5.5 feet wide. It weighs 335 pounds. With a 26.5 foot mast that weighs only 16 pounds, a high aspect main with a big roach, the boat really goes. The spinnaker douse is made easy by pulling it into a tube that runs down the center of the boat. A crew of 2 easily races the boat with a roller furling jib in addition to the hands free kite system.

Melges has done a great job of design. The boat is easy and fun to sail.

A Relaxed "Bananas" Crew

Bananas Goes 3-2-1

"Bananas" crew members Jonathan Ahlbrand, Nikiforos Delatolas and Tom Hutton kept getting better as the day went on, recording a third, a second and a first place finish in the final race of the day. Battling light and variable winds with shifts of thirty degrees common, Ahlbrand came into the second wind ward mark on a puff and used their momentum to squeeze past "Oh m" and go on to their well earned victory.

On "Oh m" each crew member took a turn at the helm. Ron Marshall drove the first race and finished second. John Kolstoe took over in the next race for a fourth. Mike Moody took on the challenge of helmsman for the final race and had a third.

On "Shibumi", two crew members took on the skipper role. Larry Koster was first at the helm and sailed to a fourth. Cassie Buarino took over for the next two races in her first Lightning driving effort and was fifth and fourth.

Scott Watkins drove "Bo Jangles" in the absence of Merrick Hurlbutt - and got good crew help from his wife Adrianne and dad Dale. Their efforts resulted in a 5-3-5 day.

"Wind Dancer" added a little to it's season leading total with two first place finishes and a second. Bob Miller was in the front of the boat, Gil Chesbro in the middle and Pat Dolan at the helm.

After Racing Sept 9

Sun Sets on Wednesday Racing for 2009

The final Wednesday race day of 2009 is in the books. And, it was a banner year for Laser Sailors. Sixteen sailors qualified for post season awards by participating in half or more of the races. The previous high was eleven in 2008. Doug Carlson is this year's Laser Champion with Mike Moody second, Olav Messerschmidt third, George Siegle fourth and Tom Hutton fifth.

On the Sunfish side, thirteen sailors participated throughout the season and four ended up qualifying for awards. John Fishbeck takes top honors followed by Neil Harrison whose second place season total was only one more than third place finisher Dave Vietti. Dennis Dudley was fourth.

In Wednesday action, Dave Vietti, Neil Harrison and Alanna Harvey each scored a first place finish. Vietti was 1-2-4, Fishbeck 2-3-2, Harrison 3-1-3 and Harvey 4-4-1.

For the Laser sailors, Olav Messerschmidt and Mike Moody each had a first and a second place finish. George Siegle took one third and Susanna Wagner the other to account for the top three spots.

Aboard "Sacrebleu"

A Salty "Sacrebleu"

Three Lansing Sailing Club members and a fourth crew member recently sailed Dennis Dudley's "Sacrebleu" to several ports of call on Port Huron.

Larry Koster writes of the adventure that he, Dudley, Ron Marshall and Bill Horwood had sailing out of Port Huron to Port Sanilac and Lexington.

Action at the Start

Fidler Wins Lake Lansing Laser Regatta

Sean Fidler of Royal Oak come out on top of a tough battle for first with Rochester Hill's Tom LaBelle to win the Lake Lansing Laser Regatta. The two sailors were tied with six points apiece as the final race began - each having two firsts and two seconds and throwing out their worst result. The final, and the regatta, was won by Fidler. LaBelle was second in the last race and on the results board for the Regatta.

Doug Carlson of the Lansing Sailing Club finished third.

More detail on the regatta coming soon.

Christa Betts Driving "Splash"

Betts Makes Splash

Christa Betts came to the Club hoping to catch a ride and ended up driving the boat. It was her first racing experience on a sailboat, and she proved to be very capable.

Although they were out of the running in one race because a spinniker sheet went under the boat, "Splash" was ably sailed to a fourth place finish in another of the races.

Christa became an Associate Member this spring so she could learn how to sail. Needless to say, she has quickly taken to sailing. Not only is she well on her way to mastering the basics, but is beginning to delve into some advanced concepts as well.

Damien Sheppard, also a new Associate Member who has been gathering points as a skipper, did middle crew work Sunday on "Bananas". Damien has driven five races with a second, third and fourth among his finishes.

Sue McIntosh, another new Associate Member in 2009, has crewed the last two Sundays with Larry Koster aboard "Shibumi". The "Shibumi" crew was in the thick of things all day, leading at times - and scored a second place finish in the final race.

Lightning Season at Mid-Way Point

With the Lightning Fleet season at about the mid-point, standings show seven skippers as having sailed enough races to qualify for inclusion in the standings. Three additional skippers have sailed and may yet qualify.

Pat Dolan and his "Wind Dancer" crew are a familiar name at the top of the standings, with Mike Moody a close second.

Detailed results and standings are found through a link on the "Racing" page by clicking on the fleet icon.

Susan Peters Initiates New Boat

Laser Sunfish Season Kicks Off

Today found Laser and Sunfish sailors on Lake Lansing for their first racing of the 2009 season. Windy conditions caused numerous capsizes, but being in the water was a welcome contrast to the 80 degree air temps.

George Siegle posted two first place finishes as he relished the bountiful wind. Doug Carlson and Mike Moody were first in the other races. Dave Vietti won both Sunfish races.

Susan Peters initiated her new boat, a beautiful yellow with blue stripe. She is going to be very fast.

Detailed results and standings will be posted soon. Go to the "Racing" page and click on the fleet icon. Results. Click Here to see pictures by Stephen Wagner.

Docks-In

Docks-In 2009 went well, despite nippy temperatures and standing water on the property.

Not only did the docks go in and the property cleaned up, but some special projects were completed as well. The canopy on the safety boat lift was lowered about a foot to make it less likely that dust and debres will get into the boat. Also, a walkway using old dock sections was laid between the drive and the sail shed.

"I would like to thank all of the many who showed up for docks in", said Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher - our in-charge guy. "The turn out was fantastic with a great group of people all pitching in."

Stephen Wagner took some pictures, several of which are posted here. The rest can be found on flickr at

Restoring the Alberta Rose

Lansing Sailing Club member and Sunfish Sailor Paul Davis writes to share his diary on restoration of the Alberta Rose. A picture of this trailable trimaran on a Grand Haven vacation can be found to the right. Click on the picture to see the diary.

Paul says, "I'm in a Yahoo group of 200 that own this kind of boat. Most are in some repair phase as they are all of about the same age, are antiques, are homebuilt, and aren't being made anymore. Since most of the owners are in Australia and New Zealand I thought they might be interested in seeing Great Lakes sailing pictures so I collected some of my past cruise pictures to share with them."

Paul goes on to say that he is "adding to the diary every time we do a project so that others can learn from it. The most interesting phase will be coming up, when we make fiberglass beams (that hold the arms) and a mechanism for flipping the main hull so we can take the keel out. I have a good friend, Phil Ruble, helping me. Phil has built an airplane. He's very interested in all things epoxy."

Paul appreciates the patience of the club members who have let him call the Sailing Club his home port while waiting for retirement and an indoor place to do the work.

A New Look for LSC

The Lansing Sailing Club website is getting a makeover. Several months ago, our hosting service was sold and we were transferred to a new server that doesn't support some of the language features we use. We made some changes to make the site usable - but are now beginning the slow task of complete tuneup.

Although we are keeping most of the old "look and feel", we are making changes so it will be easier to navagate the site and improve its readability.

During this transition, the old pages will continue to be used until we can get to changing them. We will target those pages that have been most adversely affected by the hosting service change.

A new navagation menu is one of the changes. It is much easier to read that the old menu and some reorganization groups choices more logically.

Images will be slightly smaller than before - but almost always can be clicked on to see a larger version.

If you have ideas or reactions that will help us, please send them to the Commodore.

Getting Ready for the 2009 Sailing Season

Strictly Sail Chicago, held the first weekend in February, is one of the events midwest sailors take advantage of to remind themselves that the white stuff eventually melts and sailing season is coming.

Some Lansing Sailing Club members attended the 2009 show, checked out the new gear, found their way to some seminars and renewed friendships.

Stephen Wagner had his camera in tow - and shared some pictures with us. Click on the picture at the right to see some more of them.
