The "Spartan Singles" Regatta was a
great success. A total of thirty sailors competed, including eleven collegiate
sailors from mid-west Universities and nineteen
laser sailors from lower Michigan. The goals for this Regatta were to bring
collegiate and non-collegiate laser sailors together for an enjoyable mix
of camaraderie,
high level competition and large fleet racing. It was a huge success on all
counts. Saturday's racing was for everyone while the collegiate's finished
up on Sunday.
It was an early morning start for the sailors
on Saturday, but there was excitement in the air as boats kept coming in
the drive. Soon the Lansing Sailing Club was filled with thirty Laser sailors
rigging their boats, changing into their sailing outfits and otherwise getting
ready to sail.
EJ was the youngest competitor and it was a pleasure to see how well
his skills are developing. The recruiters will soon be lining up.
The wind began to fill in a little after
nine as the fog lifted. Following a short skipper's meeting at 9:30, the
sailors headed for the race course.
The pin end was favored in this race, but
sailors were well disciplined in the morning and there were no general recalls.
On the second upwind in race one, disaster
struck one of the leading boats as George Siegle's mast broke. He was towed
to shore, borrowed wife Ann's mast and was soon back on the course.
