*These are the starting groups for those sailing a Sunfish. An adjustment in starting group will be made for the type of boat being sailed. An Optimist sailor will start one group earlier than their rating. A Laser sailor will start one group later than their rating. For example, a sailor with a 5 rating who would ordinarily start in the Yellow group when sailing a Sunfish will start with the Red group if sailing an Optimist - or the Green Group if sailing a Laser.

Rating System Details and Starting Groups

Sailors should expect that their rating will vary considerably over the course of a season because finishing in the top or bottom 30% for a race results in an immediate rating change. Sailors with a lower rating start before those with a higher rating. This makes it possible for any sailor to finish in the top group if they improve their sailing.

On the water, there are four starting groups: Red, Yellow, Green and Go. There is a one minute warning before the Red group starts, followed one minute later by the Yellow group. The Green group starts one minute after the Yellow group and the "Go" group starts one minute after Green. Sailors fall into one of these four groups based on their rating as follows:

Group Handicap Rating
Red Group Sailors with a 1, 2 or 3 Handicap Rating
Yellow Group Sailors with a 4, 5 or 6 Handicap Rating
Green Group Sailors with a 7, 8 or 9 Handicap Rating
Go Group Sailors with a 10 Handicap Rating

Everyone starts at 5, unless the coaches know from previous observtions that a higher rating is justified. Sailors on boats finishing in the top 30 percent of boats have their handicap rating increased by one but not higher than 10. Sailors on boats finishing in the bottom 30 percent of boats have their handicap rating decreased by one (but not lower than 1). For example, with 8 boats racing, those finishing in the top two spots (8 * .30 = 2.4 round to 2) will see an increase in their handicap rating. As another example, with 9 boats racing, those finishing the bottom three spots (9 * .30 = 2.7 round to three) will see a decrease in their handicap rating.
